You can use networking to make better use of your broadband connection. Here are some tips.

Networking is not difficult, if you have a broadband connection. Would you like the convenience of using your connection for more than one computer? How about a wireless connection so you can check your e-mail from anywhere in your home? Though there are some challenges which go along with a home or small office network, they are easily remedied.

Broadband (digital subscriber lines, cable, or satellite) is more useful than dial-up, especially today. The web has much more graphic content than it did a few years ago and to enjoy it you need more speed. Networking allows you to use a connection in one part of the house or apartment for more than one computer.

Working from home, regardless of the amount of work you do,would be problematic without the speed and reliability (no dropped connections) of an always on connection. There are down-sides to any connection to the Internet, especially one that is on as long as the computer is running. Some of the down-sides are outlined on previous pages of my site (see the Table of Contents).

Running a network in your home starts with the connection itself, so when the cable or phone company connects your computer to a dsl or cable modem, your network is taking shape.

If anyone in your family has a laptop that has wireless capability then it is time to add a wireless access point or router. That way the laptop doesn't have to be physically connected to the modem and it makes it much more convenient with the ability to use it anywhere in the home.

You will have to secure that wireless connection though if you don't want it to be used by someone outside your home. The setup program which helps you set up your wireless router will allow you to put a password in place which only you and your family know, just don't forget it.
